Day in My Life

Summary

I recorded what did during Tuesday, May 30th, and broke my activities into 7 categories. Then I calculated what percentage of my day each activity took up and put it in a pie chart. Finally, I made a video talking about my data and edited it.

Some might say watching YouTube until 2 am on a school night is irresponsible. I would agree, but regardless that is how my Tuesday started. After this very eventful start to my day, I woke up at 7:40 am. Then I got ready, drove to school, went to my first 4 periods, ate lunch, went to my last 2 periods, drove home, did some college work, ate dinner, drove to my other home, did some chores, played video games with my friends for a few hours, did some more chores, played some more video games, got ready for bed, and went to bed at a much more reasonable 11:30. Overall, I spent the most time sleeping, with it taking up about 26% of my day (6 hours and 10 minutes). The thing that took the second most time out of my day was entertainment. This includes playing video games with my friends and watching YouTube and this took up roughly 26% of my day (6 hours and 8 minutes). Since Tuesday is a school; day, it is unsurprising that school also took up a large chunk of my time, 25% in fact (6 hours). Luckily, school hasn’t followed my home for a while and my time dedicated to it is spent within school walls. After high school, the next most time consuming thing I did was college work. This Tuesday in particular, I had an interview for a program at UW which took up about 9% of my day (2 hours and 10 minutes) between the interview itself and preparing for the interview. The most time consuming activity after that was what I like to call “home activities.” This includes doing chores and getting ready for either school or bed and this took up about 6% of my day (1 hour and 30 minutes). The activity that took the second smallest amount of time was commuting. It took up 5% of my day (1 hour and 10 minutes) and would normally take less time since I had to drive between houses on this particular day. The activity that took the least time was eating, which I spent 3% of my day doing (50 minutes). To be honest, I feel like this was an especially lazy day for me, but I suppose that’s becoming increasingly more common. Regardless, that was a day in my life.

What I Learned & Problems I Solved

The most important thing I learned was how to use Adobe Illustrator. I have never used it before, but it seems like it will useful for making various projects in the future. A problem I solved was being unable to import my color palette into Adobe Illustrator. To get around this I copied the code for each of the colors for my color palette. Another problem was that my color palette only had 5 colors but I had 7 categories. To get around this, I used black and white for the other 2 categories.

Senioritis Post-production Blog Post

Summary

As the editor, I worked on the film the most in post-production. I was responsible for organizing the shots and editing them into a cohesive film. I also took the sounds created by the sound designer and put them into the film at the appropriate times.

Discussion with Director

I chose to use black screens with text to communicate a change in the date. I chose to do this because it is an easily understood way to show that the following scenes took place in the date that was in the text. Another editing choice I made was to use fading transitions during the montage. I did this because the fading transitions communicate the passage of time and are sort of jarring, which helps communicate that the protagonist is stressed.

Test Edits

This was going to be the final edit before we filmed the zoom in on the papers that transitioned into the zoom out of the diploma. Instead of the zoom in to zoom out, a screen with text is used to show the change in date and the zoom out from the diploma follows the repeated establishing shots of the school.

Contributions with the Director

A decision made was to cut a few shots of the protagonist working at her computer. This decision was made because these shots were drastically more zoomed in than the other shots and it contained some background laughter. Another decision made was to use the line “Congratulations to our 2023 seniors,” as opposed to “Give it up for our 2023 seniors,” and “Give a hand to our 2023 seniors.” This decision was made because we agreed that the line we used was more professional and was more fitting for a graduation ceremony.

How I Could Have Improved The Film

I could have improved the film by focusing more on rhythm with the editing. Specifically, I could have edited on the blinks. I also feel that the edits could have been more smooth and that I probably could have found better points in the shots to edit. I also feel like the film could have been better if we had music in the background since the noise of the protagonist moving isn’t very loud and it makes the film seem rather dead, but we didn’t have enough time to create any. Another thing that would have made the film better would have been a shot of something like a calendar to communicate a change in date, rather than the black screens with white text.

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

I became more comfortable with using Premier Pro, as I had only used it on a few previous occasions. I also learned how to layer background sounds and how to mix background sounds with the audio of the camera. A problem I solved was that initially we had forgotten to film a scene that would have allowed for a smooth transition into the next. To get around this, I used a title slate to show that the date had changed which communicated the passage of time without that transitional shot. However, we did eventually shoot that shot, so that text screen was not in the final edit.

Senioritis Production Blog Post

Summary

During the production process, I mainly remained in the computer lab and worked on the rush edits while my group was filming. However, I did act in a role during the final day of the shooting.

Contribution to the Shooting

I contributed ideas of things we could do to make the film better in the process of filming, such as how many establishing shots should be taken of the school in order to better show it and what distance they should be taken from.

Challenges Faced During Shooting

During the shooting, we initially wanted to show more days of the montage. However we did not have enough time for this, so we decided to only do three different days, with the third day being where she falls asleep and imagines herself graduating.

Assistance Given to the Production Team

I helped the production team by filling the role of the principal during the scene where Alice dreams about her graduation. I also helped set up some of the shots, like putting the table in the corner.

What I Learned

I learned how to use Premier Pro while editing the rushes, since I have only used Premier Pro on a few occasions before.

Senioritis Film Pre-Production – Editor’s Journal

Summary

A girl repeats the same school-day process in order to graduate.

Element 17: Montage

To show the protagonist working for multiple days in order to establish her daily routine.

Element 19: Assembly Editing

To establish the location of the events of the film (the school).

Element 25: Smash Cut

To reveal the actual date when the protagonist wakes up.

Element 24: Dissolve

To transition in the montage to show that the protagonist is in a flow of work.

Element 47: Match Cut

To transition from the protagonist working towards her dream about graduating.

Planning and Collaboration with Screenwriter

We planned the smash cut of the date after the protagonist receives her diploma (which can be seen in the storyboard). We also planned to use a color filter to make the film have brighter colors.

Planning and Collaboration with Director

We planned for me to have as little a role as possible in the film in order for me to edit, so I was cast in a very minor role, which was the principal who gives the protagonist her diploma

Influences from Films

The Cube- The editor (John Sanders) used his editing to compensate for the low budget of the film. The Cube also features numerous close up shots of characters that serve to unsettle the audience.

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

My team struggled with coming up with an idea for the film. To solve this, all though I didn’t come up with the idea in its entirety, I helped come up with the idea of the twist ending where the girl wakes up and realizes that she was dreaming and it’s still only September.
